Active mode:
The client tell to the server to connect on port XXX (the port is determine by the client via the PORT command)

Here, the server connect to the client. So, if the user is back of a firewall, the server can't connect to the client.
Passive Mode:
The server tell to the client to connect on the PORT XXXX (the port is determne by the server via the PASV command)

Here, the client connect to the server. So, if the server is back of a firewall, the client can't connect to the server.
